어떤 기도

큰 일을 이루기 위해 힘을 주십사 하나님께 기도했더니 겸손을 배우라고 연약함을 주셨다. 많은 일을 해낼 수 있는 건강을 구했는데 보다 가치있는 일하라고 병을 주셨다. 행복해지고 싶어 부유함을 구했더니 지혜로와지라고 가난을 주셨다. 세상 사람들의 칭찬을 받고자 성공을 구했더니 뽐내지 말라고 실패를 주셨다. 삶을 누릴 수 있게 모든 것을 갖게 해 달라고 기도했더니 모든 것을 누릴 수 있는 삶 그 자체를 선물로 주셨다. 구한 것 하나도 주시지 않았지만 내 소원 모두 들어주셨다. 하나님의 뜻을 따르지 못하는 삶이었지만 내 맘 속의 진작에 표현하지 못한 기도는 모두 들어주셨다. 나는 가장 많은 축복을 받은 사람이다.

I asked God for strength that I might achieve; I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health that I might do greater things; I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy; I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have praise of men; I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life; I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among all men, most richly blessed.
